The Background

Formerly known as Kommune, the Department Food Hall in Sheffield is a reinvention of a much-loved venue located in a stunning Grade II listed building. With its striking 18-foot ceilings and original concrete pillars, the space has a strong architectural identity that now serves as the backdrop to a vibrant food and drink destination. Home to independent kitchens, bakeries, brewers, and retailers, the hall recently underwent a complete transformation, not only in name but also in purpose and experience.

The Task

Contract Furniture Group was approached by design studio Chef’s Table, who had seen our previous work and were seeking a trusted partner to bring their vision for the venue to life. This was a new client relationship and a perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate the full breadth of our services. The brief was to create a premium, open-plan social space with a strong focus on community, connection, and creativity — all while respecting the 1960s architectural heritage of the building.

The designers had a clear layout plan in mind, and with the help of our sales and production teams, were able to advise on the best materials, finishes, and custom sizing to enhance both the style and flow of the space. Once we received the initial drawing pack, our in-house design team translated it into detailed 2D and 3D renderings, helping the client fully visualise the concept before manufacturing began.

The Work

A key aesthetic was industrial design with a 60s flair. To reflect the sense of community, we manufactured large bespoke laminate dining tables in a warm Tobacco Walnut finish. These were accompanied by coworking tables and compact two-seater options, also in laminate, for more intimate settings. One standout element of the project was a collection of asymmetric circular tables featuring built-in planters, designed and manufactured in-house to become functional centrepieces.

The fixed seating installations were also especially distinctive. Through the centre of the open-plan hall, we installed custom S-shaped booths, while the perimeter was enhanced with half-radial configurations. These were upholstered in a vibrant lime faux leather with a vertical “sausage” style backrest. Additional freestanding fixed seating included integrated planters, continuing the theme of natural accents and soft separation. We also created wall-fitted fixed seating in a deep wine faux leather, finished with panelled seat pads and backrests. All fixed seating was tailored to match the Tobacco Walnut table tops for a seamless, cohesive look.

To complement the bespoke joinery and fixed seating, we supplied loose furniture, including our Monica Side Chairs, upholstered in matching lime faux leather with a walnut frame. Benet Veneer Side Chairs with rattan backs were selected for their mid-century character, and matching high chairs were placed along a bespoke poseur-height table with integrated glass panels, providing semi-private dining options for solo guests or couples.Looking to enhance or expand your venue? Our joinery team played a vital role in the transformation. On-site, we extended both the main bar and wine bar, carefully matching the existing timberwork and tiling. We also manufactured and fitted wall panels in oak slats, colour-matched to Tobacco Walnut, bringing unity to the interior’s palette. The cocktail bar was extended to include new refrigeration units and a custom access door, while glass walls were introduced to subtly zone the space while retaining an open, flowing layout.

Soft furnishings completed the venue’s transformation. We crafted pencil-pleat lined curtains for both the main entrance and staff access points, providing practical division with an elegant finish.
