The Background

The Spice Lounge is a much loved Indian cuisine restaurant in the heart of Derby city centre. Located on Friar Gate one of the city's vibrant dining areas, this award-winning restaurant opened in 2010 and has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Specialising in stimulating Bangladeshi and Southern Asian dishes with a creative twist, the restaurant prides itself on its interior décor which was designed to create an ambient setting for its guests that complimented the subtleties of the cuisine being served.

The Task

Having been established for over 13 years, The Spice Lounge was looking to refresh some of the old furniture and generally modernise the look of the restaurant, moving away from bright and bold traditional Indian style printed fabrics, it was keen to still represent the origin of the dishes for a complete experience. The client and their designer visited our showroom in Nottingham to discuss their ideas and vision with our sales team and were able to quickly to pick which style of furniture they needed along with the fabrics. One of the client's key goals for the design and layout was to increase the flexibility of covers, as the space was predominantly filled with booths, which meant space was limited and in set positions.

The Work

Our sales team visited the site to take measurements and ensure the current floor plan would work and after some adjustments, our manufacturing team got to work on providing the client with some samples of the key pieces they had chosen.

The client and their designer had chosen a mix of loose and booth-style fixed seating areas, upholstered in Sunbury Utopia Dune, an abstract print with yellow, grey and neutral tones. These booths would sit along the left-hand side of the restaurant towards the back and were designed to comfortably sit 6 people, allowing the restaurant to use them for both smaller and medium-sized groups.

The rest of the restaurant consisted of loose furniture including our Pannacotta Side Chairs and Charlotte Side Chairs, both with gold feet. These chairs are comfortable and easy to manoeuvre with a beautiful contemporary design, in keeping with the client's overall vision. To keep a touch of the traditional Indian theming to the restaurant the team also chose our Kempton Scroll High Back Side Chairs, both with a plain back and deep button upholstered feature. All 3 of these chairs were upholstered in a wide range of different fabrics from Sunbury and Panaz, including a bold mustard yellow (Madison Zest). These fabrics complimented each other perfectly whilst making each chair unique and giving the impression of an eclectic mix of furniture. All fabrics chosen were extremely durable and antibacterial with an easy clean finish.

To match the gold detailing of the chair legs, the Zeus Brass square and rectangle table bases, with a black marble effect laminate for the table tops, finished with gold edging were employed to great effect.

The Result

The Spice Lounge now has an entirely different looking space. Having also been completely redecorated, including new floors and wall panelling along with updated furniture, the restaurant has a fresh contemporary feel that also has nods to a traditional Indian restaurant. The design of the furniture and floor plan have now allowed the restaurant to increase capacity, take larger bookings and not waste larger tables on smaller bookings.
